Based on the real-life American star, Anna Nicole Smith, the opera is a tale of a working class single mother who climbs the celebrity ladder. After becoming a dancer and playboy model she meets her 89-year-old millionaire husband.
Anna Nicole, the opera, depicts a desperate life of rags to riches: undergoing a legal battle over her husband’s will, the death of her son, Daniel (due to a drug overdose) and the physical pain caused by her breast implants. Soon after her Daniel’s death, she also dies of an overdose.
Following its acclaim at its première in 2011, Anna Nicole will be presented at the Royal Opera House (ROH) with its opening night [Thursday 11th September] entirely dedicated to students with tickets priced from £1 and £5. Front row stall seats are £25.
Dutch Soprano Eva Marie Westbroek takes on her second role as the titular Anna Nicole with her high ranging vocals, heart felt lyricics singing entertaining songs such as the ‘American Dream.’ The music is a combination of jazz, blues, traditional operatic language and musical theatre conducted by music director of the ROH, Antonio Pappano.
Many cast members from the original première return to re-act their roles. British Tenor Alan Oke is Anna Nicole’s husband, Old Man Marshall; Wynne Evans plays the Mayor of Mexia; British mezzo-soprano Susan Bickley is Virgie and many more. American baritone, Rod Gilfry is new to the ROH’s presentation of Anna Nicole but sung the role of Stern, (Anna’s lawyer) in the New York City Opera.
Despite the ultimate tragedy, there are buzzing, thrilling numbers and dazzling scenes of party mayhem and jazz performances including Anna’s sensational wedding. There is also an operatic version of US TV host Larry King to add to the drama sung by Peter Hoare.
With an intense libretto by Richard Thomas and flamboyantly grand stage designs by Richard Jones, this satirical opera hones in on the parodies of celebrity culture, the disturbing nature of the media in today’s society and gives a stage interpretation of the fame and tragedy that befalls Anna Nicole.
