Social Sciences Week 2014

The programme of events draws on the wide-ranging and exciting research being undertaken by scholars within Birkbeck’s School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, and also features high-profile speakers Professor Sir Richard Evans (Cambridge), Martin Argles (former photographer for the Guardian) and Birkbeck’s Department of Politics’ first writer-in-residence, documentary photographer and poet Carlos Reyes Manzo.

Law on Trial: Uncovering the limits and potential of scientific evidence

Writing course materials and formative assessment for successful flexible learning

For the latest free CDE seminar there will be three fellows including Dr Clare Sansom, Senior Associate Lecturer (Birkbeck Uni) to conduct workshops on writing course materials for flexible learning. The session will consider some of the issues related to course material design, such as student retention, collaboration and assessment, and will feature presentations and much more.

Japan’s All-Female Takarazuka Revue—Considering Gender/Sexuality from Cross-Cultural Perspectives

14:00 to 16:30

This event aims at providing an opportunity to cultivate cross-cultural understanding of Takarazuka. The screening of Dream Girls (1994), the documentary of the Takarazuka Revue, directed by British female documentary makers Kim Longinotto and Jano Williams, is followed by the discussion session led by Dr. Nobuko Anan at Birkbeck College and short performance by two former Takarazuka performers, each of whom used to be a “female-role player” and a “male-role player” respectively. Jano Williams will attend the event as well.
